Gastrointestinal & Antiemetic Medicines
Acid-suppression and antiemetic agents supplied as injectables and orals, including the proton-pump inhibitor and the two antiemetics carried on the WHO Model List.
The WHO Model List carries omeprazole as a 40 mg powder for injection, and metoclopramide and ondansetron in its antiemetic section. Metoclopramide is not for use in neonates, and ondansetron is listed for use above one month of age.
At a glance
- Omeprazole is the proton-pump inhibitor carried on the WHO Model List, as 40 mg powder for injection.
- The 2025 revision replaced omeprazole 20 mg and 40 mg oral-liquid sachets with 1 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL powders.
- Metoclopramide is not for use in neonates; ondansetron is listed for use above one month of age.
- Dexamethasone injection appears in both the antiemetic and the antiallergic sections of the Model List.
- Ranitidine remains listed but has faced regulatory restriction in several markets since 2020 over nitrosamine impurities.
01What the published guidance says
Every statement below is drawn from WHO or MSF published material and linked to its source. We summarise; we do not reproduce. Statements marked as our own are commercial positions, not clinical guidance.
Omeprazole is the listed proton-pump inhibitor
Section 17.1 of the Model List carries omeprazole as powder for injection 40 mg in vial, powder for oral liquid, and solid oral dosage forms of 10, 20 and 40 mg, for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It was first added in 2009. Therapeutic alternatives are the A02BC proton-pump inhibitor subgroup, excluding combinations. The 2025 revision replaced the 20 mg and 40 mg oral-liquid sachets with 1 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL powders for oral liquid.
The antiemetics and their age limits
Section 17.2 carries metoclopramide injection 5 mg/mL in 2 mL ampoule and 10 mg tablets, with a Model List note that it is not for use in neonates. Ondansetron is listed as injection 2 mg base/mL in 2 mL ampoule, oral liquid 4 mg base/5 mL, and solid oral forms equivalent to 4, 8 and 24 mg base, indicated above one month of age.
Dexamethasone doubles as an antiemetic
Dexamethasone injection 4 mg/mL is listed in the antiemetic section as well as under antiallergic and palliative-care medicines — useful context when building a chemotherapy-support or post-operative nausea kit.
A note on ranitidine
Ranitidine appears in section 17.1 of the Model List as an antiulcer medicine, with injection, oral liquid and 150 mg tablet presentations. Since 2020 it has been subject to market-level regulatory action in several countries relating to nitrosamine (NDMA) impurities. Confirm current local registration and monograph status before ordering.

03Specifying your order
The five things worth stating on a purchase order for this group, so the quotation comes back right first time.
PPI presentation
Powder for injection or oral solid. For oral liquid, note that the Model List now specifies 1 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL powders.
Reconstitution guidance
Injectable proton-pump inhibitors require approved reconstitution instructions. Confirm they are supplied in your label language.
Age-band labelling
If the product will be used in paediatric settings, state the age band. Metoclopramide is excluded from neonates and ondansetron below one month.
Antiemetic pairing
For chemotherapy or post-operative nausea kits, confirm whether dexamethasone must be co-supplied.
Ranitidine status
Confirm current registration and monograph status in your market before ordering ranitidine.
04How we supply it
Standardised GMP production workshops with an independent R&D laboratory and a complete quality-inspection centre.

Omeprazole powder for injection 40 mg, omeprazole capsules, cimetidine injection and ranitidine where locally registered.
Antiemetics
Ondansetron injection and oral forms, metoclopramide injection and tablets, dexamethasone injection.
Care-setting fit
Presentations suited to hospital, day-surgery and oncology-support settings, with oral-liquid options for paediatric use where listed.

COA with assay and related substances, plus stability data and registration support documents.
05Safety, labelling & regulatory notes
Points worth carrying into your tender, label review or clinical briefing.
- Metoclopramide is not for use in neonates according to the Model List, and ondansetron is listed for use above one month of age. Reflect these limits in promotional and labelling material.
- Confirm the current regulatory status of ranitidine in your market before ordering — several regulators have restricted or withdrawn it since 2020.
- Check that the omeprazole oral-liquid presentation you order matches the current Model List specification (1 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL powders for oral liquid following the 2025 revision).
- Injectable proton-pump inhibitors require reconstitution in line with the approved instructions; supply the approved reconstitution guidance with every batch.
