What Is Iron Sucrose Injection?
Iron Sucrose Injection is an iron replacement product used to treat iron deficiency anemia in people with kidney disease. Venofer is usually given with another medication to promote the growth of red blood cells (such as Aranesp, Epogen, or Procrit).
What Are Side Effects of Iron Sucrose Injection?
Iron Sucrose Injection may cause serious side effects including:
problems with your dialysis vein access point,
chest pain,
severe headache,
blurred vision,
pounding in your neck or ears,
lightheadedness,
pain or swelling,
bloating,
nausea,
vomiting,
loss of appetite,
diarrhea, and
fever
Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.
Common side effects of Iron Sucrose Injection:
muscle cramps,
nausea,
vomiting,
stomach pain,
strange taste in the mouth or decreased sense of taste,
diarrhea,
constipation,
headache,
cough,
sore throat,
sinus pain,
congestion,
back pain,
joint pain,
dizziness,
weakness,
tired feeling,
anxiety,
ear pain,
swelling of the arms/legs, or
injection site reactions (pain, swelling, burning, irritation, or redness).
Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Iron Sucrose Injection including:
abdominal pain,
chest pain,
irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias),
pressure in the chest,
severe headache and blurred vision (hypertension), or
problems with your dialysis access site (graft).
Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:
Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Iron Sucrose Injection?
Iron Sucrose Injection is only administered intravenously by slow injection or by infusion. Dose is determined by whether the patient is on dialysis and what type of dialysis.
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Iron Sucrose Injection?
Iron Sucrose Injection may interact with iron supplements or other iron-based oral medications, such as ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, and ferrous sulfate, and others. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.
Iron Sucrose Injection During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Iron Sucrose Injection should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
