Ophthalmic acyclovir is used to treat an infection of the eye caused by herpes simplex virus. Acyclovir is in a class of antiviral medications called synthetic nucleoside analogues. It works by stopping the spread of the herpes virus in the eye.

Uses

For acute herpetic keratitis:
Adults and children 2 years of age and older—1 drop for once, 5 times per day (about every 3 hours while awake) until the eye heals, and then 1 drop for once, 3 times per day for 7 days.
Children younger than 2 years of age—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.

Side Effects of acyclovir

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Eye pain or sting
painful irritation of the clear front part of the eye
redness, itching, pain, swelling, or other irritation of the eye
Rare

Redness, swelling, or itching of the eyelid
Incidence not known

Hives or welts, itching, skin rash
large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or genitals
redness of the skin
Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.
